Haupt, who lives in Seattle, is the author of several books, including Crow Planet, The Urban Bestiary, and Rare Encounters with Ordinary Birds. The book offers a blend of natural history, biography, and personal memoir. Despite knowing that starlings are reviled by even the most compassionate conservationists for being a nonnative, invasive species, Haupt found herself enchanted by the same intelligence and playful spirit that had charmed Mozart. More than two centuries later, Haupt rescued a baby starling of her own. The bird served as his companion, distraction, consolation, and muse.
